Open an NVivo for Mac (Version 11) project. You can open a project in NVivo for Mac (Version 11) format (.nvpx) saved on your computer or network drive. Install NVivo Mac
NVivo 11 Mac is available as a download from https://www.qsrinternational.com/support_downloads.aspx. Alternatively, you can order the software on a USB flash drive.
To install NVivo Mac:
- Locate and double-click the NVivo dmg file that you downloaded. If you have the NVivo 11 USB flash drive, the dmg file for NVivo Mac is in the root folder.
- Drag the NVivo icon into your Applications folder.
Note: If you already have a previous version of NVivo Mac installed, make sure the application is closed before you install this version. You can choose to Keep both versions or Replace the older version of NVivo. If you keep both versions, you can rename the second one.
Enter and activate a license and set up user profile
You need to activate your license key—this is a simple and secure process that ensures valid licenses are used to operate the software.
Each instance of NVivo needs to be activated, so if you are installing NVivo in an onsite laboratory or across a network, activation is required from each workstation.
You will have received a license key when you purchased the product. For more information about license keys, refer to Understand licensing for NVivo.
You can carry out all, some or none of the steps below on behalf of the user. For example, you could enter the license key for the user and leave the license activation and user profile for the user to fill in later.
To enter and activate a license key:
- Start NVivo.
- Accept the license agreement, if prompted.
- In the Welcome to NVivo for Mac dialog, enter the license key, and then click Next.
- In the License Activation dialog, enter your details. Fields marked with an (*) must be completed.
- Click Activate.
- On the NVivo - User Profile dialog, you are prompted to enter the user's name and initials.
- Click Continue.
NOTE
- You can also perform an unattended activation of a license.
- If the user does not have an Internet connection, they can send an activation request to QSR by email, mail, fax or phone. For more information, refer to the NVivo Help.
Deactivating NVivo Mac
You can deactivate the NVivo license on a particular computer. For example, if a user gets a new computer, they should deactivate the NVivo license on the old computer, before installing and activating NVivo on the new computer.
To deactivate NVivo via the Internet:
- Ensure that you are connected to the Internet.
- If you have an NVivo project open, you must close it before you can deactivate the license—on the menu bar, choose File > Close.
- On the menu bar, choose NVivo > Licensing > Deactivate.
- Click Yes to confirm.
NVivo deactivates the license and displays a message confirming that the license has been deactivated.
- Click OK.
Uninstalling NVivo Mac
Before you uninstall NVivo, you need to deactivate it.
To uninstall NVivo for Mac:
- Drag the NVivo app from the Applications folder to the Trash.
- Empty the Trash.
NVivo qualitative data analysis software is available to MSU faculty, staff, students, and graduate teaching assistants via an MSU site-wide license. NVivo may be installed on personally-owned or MSU-owned devices. Follow the steps below to download.

MSU's new license key for NVivo 12 is available now.
***The new license key will only work for version 12***
ATTENTION NVIVO 11 Users:
If you downloaded NVivo 11 from MSU last year, you will need to download both the key and NVivo 12 as the new key will not work with version 11.

To download, install & activate NVivo:
Follow the appropriate instructions below for your computer.
NVivo for Mac (version 12)
- Requires Mac OS X 10.11 or newer
- Requires license activation key to install
You'll download NVivo 12 software directly from the NVivo website however, first you'll need the license activation key in order to install it. The key, is stored in a text file that you'll download from the UIT Software portal.
Get license activation key:
- Go to the Software Portaland log in with your NetID.
- Scroll down to NVivo section and check box to accept terms then click NVivo 12 license key to download key file.
- Open text file to have key ready and proceed to step one below to download software.
Download Nvivo 11 For Windows
Download & install software:
- Go to Nvivo Support and Downloads page.
- Click the NVivo for Mac (version 12) link to download file.
- Go to your Downloads folder and double-click the NVivo.dmg file to open.
- Slide the NVivo.appicon to the Apps folder.
The file is copied to your Applications folder. - Go to Applications folder > CONTROL-click NVivo.app > click Open.
- When prompted with: “NVivo.app” is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it? Click Open.
- Enter your computer's password, when prompted, then click OK.
- Click Agree to accept End-User License Agreement terms.
The NVivo Setup dialog box opens. - Click the radio button next to Enter NVivo license key and enter the license key.
- Click Next.
- Complete the required fields in License Activation form and then click Activate.
A pop-up will alert you in a few seconds when the license had been activated. - Click OK.
- Complete User Profile fields and click Continue.
NVivo 12 should be ready to use, click the Help link in the program to find learning resources OR see the Training section below.
NVivo 12 for Windows
- Requires Windows 7, 8.1, or 10
- Requires license activation key to install

Download and Installation:
- Go to: Nvivo Support and Downloads page.
- Click NVivo 12 for Windows version appropriate for your computer (see how to find the windows, 32-bit or 64-bit, system you are running).
- Click Save when prompted 'What do you want to do with ….'

- Click Yes, when prompted 'Do you want to allow this app to make changes to this device.'
- Select language for installation and click OK.
The NVivo 12 Install Shield Wizard opens. - Follow prompts to install.
If prompted to enable .NET Framework 3.5 to operate, check button next to Enable via internet and then click Enable. - Click Finish to close Installer window when installation is completed.
Activate:
- Double-click the NVivo 12 shortcut icon on your desktop to open NVivo.
- Enter (or copy and paste) the license key obtained the text file you downloaded.
- In the License Activation dialog box, enter your details. Fields marked with an asterisk (*) must be provided.
- Click Activate.
A pop-up will alert you when the license had been activated. - Click OK.
- Complete User Profile fields and click Continue.
NVivo 12 should be ready to use. Click the Help link in the program to find learning resources OR see the Training section below.
32 or 64-bit?To find if your computer is running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows do the following:
Windows 10:
a) Type System in the Search box
b) Click System (Control Panel)
c) Under System section, locate System type where you’ll find if you’re running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows
Windows 7:
Go to Start > right-click Computer >select Properties > look under System for System type.
Windows 8.1
a) Using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, click Settings, and then click Change PC settings. (Or swipe in from right, tap Settings > Change PC Settings)
b) Tap or click PC and devices, and then tap or click PC info.
c) Look under PC for System type to see if you're running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows.
A new NVivo 12 license activation key can be downloaded from the MSU Software Portal.
Nvivo 11 For Windows
IMPORTANT REQUIREMENT - this key is ONLY for NVivo 12 and requires that you download the new version 12 from NVivo.
You can uninstall NVivo 11after installing 12 if you wish.
